A Starter’s Guide to Gardening in New England
The Sustainability of Gardening in New England
Gardening is abundant in the Northeast region of the United States. New Englanders have been gardening since the 1600s when settlers from Europe brought their love for nature with them to the new world. In these times, it was not uncommon to find gardens on every acre of land. Nowadays, people are looking for ways to take care of their garden's resources with the ground space they have available, while cutting back on environmental impact. Some gardeners use native plants and native flowers need less watering and upkeep.
The Northeast is known for its lush forests and abundant agriculture. However, the region is experiencing rapid urbanization, which has led to increased erosion of agricultural land. A major environmental concern that remains is deforestation (loss of forested areas) which also increases the amount of water runoff into rivers and streams during heavy rains. New England in particular, can be characterized by a temperate climate with four distinct seasons. The growing season for the Northeast typically ranges from 120-140 days, including relatively mild winters and moderate summers.
This is one of the reasons why PlantParenthood puts a special emphasis on sustainable gardening. We are so intent on keeping our designs filled with native plants from the region, because this brings nature back to where it started.
